Booking international flights

Booking international flights can feel confusing and stressful. Prices change daily, sometimes hourly, and travelers are often left wondering whether they should book now or wait for a better deal. The good news? There is a best time to book international flights, and understanding airline pricing patterns can save you hundreds of dollars.

In this guide, we'll break down the best months, days, and timing strategies to book international flights... plus expert tips to avoid common mistakes that make tickets more expensive.

How Airline Pricing Really Works

Airlines use dynamic pricing systems that adjust fares based on:

  • Demand
  • Seasonality
  • Seat availability
  • Booking behavior
  • Fuel costs and competition

This simple means prices rise as more seats are sold, especially close to departure dates. Knowing when airlines typically release cheaper fares gives you a major advantage.

Best Time to Book International Flights (General Rule)

The sweet spot to book international flights: 3 to 6 months before departure

This window consistently offers the best balance between availability and pricing for most international routes.

Region-based booking timeline:

  • Europe: 4 - 6 months in advance
  • Asia: 3 - 5 months in advance
  • Australia & New Zealand: 5 - 7 months in advance
  • Middle East & Africa: 3 - 6 months in advance

Booking too early (10 - 12 months ahead) often means paying premium prices, while booking too late usually results in fewer seats and higher fares.

Best Month to Book International Flights:

Cheapest months to book:

  • January
  • February
  • September
  • October

These are considered off-peak seasons, when demand drops and airlines compete harder on pricing.

Most expensive months to book:

  • June
  • July
  • December (especially holidays)

Best Day of the Week to Book Flights

While airlines no longer release sales on a single day, data still shows trends:

Best days to book:

  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday

Worst days to book:

  • Friday
  • Sunday

Tip: Prices may fluctuate during the week, but booking midweek still offers slightly better deals.

Best Time of Day to Book Flights

There's a common myth that flights are cheapest late at night. While timing isn't as critical as when you book, many travelers notice better pricing:

  • Early morning
  • Late night (less competition from other buyers)

Cheapest Days to Fly Internationally

Even if booking timing is right, travel days matter.

Cheapest days to fly:

  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday

Most expensive days:

  • Friday
  • Saturday

Flying midweek can significantly reduce airfare, especially on long-haul routes.

When NOT to Book International Flights

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Booking during major holidays
  • Waiting until the last 2–3 weeks before departure
  • Searching repeatedly without clearing cookies
  • Booking only nonstop flights (connecting flights are often cheaper)

Best Tools to Find Cheap International Flights

Use flight comparison tools that track prices over time:

  • Google Flights (price tracking & alerts)
  • Skyscanner
  • Kayak
  • Momondo
  • Kiwi

Set price alerts at least 6 months in advance.

Pro Tips to Save More on International Flights

  • Be flexible with dates
  • Consider nearby airports
  • Book round-trip instead of one-way
  • Avoid peak travel seasons
  • Combine airlines when possible

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is it cheaper to book international flights early?

Not always. Booking too early can be expensive. The best deals usually appear 3–6 months before departure.

Do flight prices go down closer to departure?

Rarely. For international flights, prices usually increase as departure approaches.

Are last-minute international flights cheaper?

In most cases, no. Last-minute deals are uncommon for international travel.

Final Thoughts

Knowing the best time to book international flights can make a huge difference in your travel budget. Plan ahead, track prices early, and stay flexible - your wallet will thank you.

Travel book

If you are a book lover and love to travel across the world, then you have come to the right place! Have you ever asked yourself why you pick a specific city or country to travel to? Almost certainly it is just because someone you know went there, a photograph/video on social media platforms, or a travel book you have read that inspired you. There are several ways to fuel your desire to travel and the great one, in my opinion, is diving into a good travel book!

Reading travel novels/books are a brilliant way to get motivation for your next destination in the world. These wanderlust-exciting reads are a real combination – old and latest, fiction and non-fiction, masterpieces, and relaxed beach reads. Rolf Potts beautifully makes a convincing case for this kind of lifestyle and how it can be perfect for those who have been looking for a way to travel the world over a very long period.

Into the Wild - by Jon Krakauer

A delightful page-turner is very well-written with modesty, imminence, and great style. Must have kids travel toys for long flight

We've all been there as parents - traveling with kids for the first time. It can be challenging and exhausting at times, especially during long flights. We've had similar experiences a few times while traveling with our kids. And through those journeys, we finally found a set of solutions that work very well with our kids now.

This post contains affiliate links. This simply means that if you make a purchase following one of these links, I earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

So, here are some of our tried and tested picks for parents out there to help keep their kids occupied on a long flight:

1. Sticker Books

This is always our number one pick. It worked with both our kids as they both love stickers. There are many sticker books available with different themes like transportations, animals, shapes, etc. You can choose one based on your child's interest. Here are the links to some of the sticker books we personally chose for our kids:

2. Teething Toys

Teething toys are especially useful for infants to help keep them calm during the flight. They can also help relieve ear pressure during takeoff and landing. Some of our top picks include:

3. Art And Craft

Kids love being creative. They enjoy colors, experimenting, and doing things on their own. Here are some great art and craft items my kids love to use during flights:

We don't recommend bringing watercolors or sketch pens as they can create a mess on clothes, skin, or even everything around you on the flight. Trust me... you don't want to deal with that kind of mess while traveling!

4. Pop It Toy

These fidget toys are fun and keep kids engaged for a long time. Some options we like:

5. Magic Water Coloring Set

My kids absolutely love magic water coloring books, regardless of the theme. These come with a refillable water pen, so there's no mess to worry about. That's why these are the ideal travel activity books for our kids. Some of our favorites are:

6. Hotwheels / Mini Cars

My son loves mini cars, especially Hot Wheels. He always carries one or two wherever he goes. For international travel, we give just a couple to him and keep a few extras as surprise gifts during the flight. This keeps him excited and engaged, especially since he enjoys pretend play with his mini cars. Some of his favorites are:

7. Small Toy Figures

Bringing along some small toy figures when traveling with kids is a great idea. They don't take up much space, so it's easy to carry several. We recommend not giving them all at once... rotate them as your child gets bored. Some of our top choices are:

8. Buckle Toys

These colorful kid-friendly toys are perfect for keeping little hands busy on long flights. They’re not only engaging but also help with cognitive development for kids. My buckle toy recommendations are:

Some parents might be wondering why I didn't mention a tablet. Well, I prefer a screen-free approach, so I haven't introduced one to my kids so far. That said, there's absolutely no shame or guilt if other parents choose to use it - I'm not here to judge. I simply try my best to keep them off screens, especially while traveling.

I hope this will help parents who are worried about long flight with their kids and makes your trip easier and more stress-free!

Traveling with kids

Traveling with Kids? Worry no more because here we are going to share some very interesting tips to make it stress free and keep it fun at the same time.

Being a mom of two, I can totally relate how planning a trip with kids can feel overwhelming. But what if I say that it can be an enjoyable adventure for the whole family. Amazing... right? Whether you're flying across the country or taking a road trip, keeping your little ones entertained, comfortable, and happy is the key to your stress-free journey.

We are going to share some great tips on how to travel with kids like a pro, from packing smart to handling mid-trip meltdowns. Get ready to create lasting memories - without the chaos!

1. Plan Ahead (But Stay Flexible)

A solid plan can make all the difference when we're traveling with kids. Book your flights and accommodations in advance to secure the family-friendly options. However, you also need to be prepared for the unexpected like delays or sudden snack cravings. Keeping a flexible mindset will help you adapt and keep your trip stress-free.

Pro Tip: If you're flying, choose flights during your child’s nap time or early in the morning when they’re fresh and energetic.

2. Pack Light Because Less is More

If you will overpack, this can lead to unnecessary stress for you and your family. So, it's a big NO. We recommend you to focus on the essentials like:

  • Travel-sized toiletries and medications
  • Extra clothes (for unexpected spills)
  • A mix of snacks to avoid "hungry" meltdowns
  • A few favorite toys, books, or tablets loaded with kid-friendly entertainment

Pro Tip: You can use packing cubes (transparent, if possible) to keep your items organized and easy to find.

3. Keep Your Kids Entertained on the Go

Boredom is the biggest challenge when traveling with kids, specially when they have to sit for long periods. So, here are some of the options you can use to keep them engaged with:

  • Interactive games (I Spy, travel bingo)
  • Audiobooks or kid-friendly podcasts
  • New coloring books or sticker sets
  • A surprise toy for long flights or car rides

Pro Tip: Let them pick a small backpack with their own travel goodies. It makes them feel more involved!

4. Choose Kid-Friendly Accommodations

It's true that not all hotels and rentals are kid-friendly. So, there are a few tips that you can always look for:

  • Hotels with play areas or pools
  • Family suites with extra space
  • Cooking area to prepare simple meals
  • Nearby parks or attractions for easy tours

Pro Tip: You can always call ahead to ask about cribs, high chairs, or special amenities you need for your child.

5. Pack Snacks

A child get angry or cranky when he is hungry. So, we suggest you to always keep healthy snacks on hand! Some of the best travel-friendly snacks are:

  • Granola bars
  • Sliced fruits in leak-proof containers
  • Cheese sticks
  • Crackers and peanut butter
  • Roasted fox nuts (aka Lotus seeds or Makhana)

Pro Tip: Make sure that you avoid sugary snacks before long trips to prevent energy crashes.

6. Prepare for Meltdowns

Tantrums may happen, especially if your kids are tired or hungry or stressed or overstimulated or uncomfortable. In that situation, please stay calm, acknowledge their feelings, and redirect their attention. A favorite toy or a quick walk or some snacks can work wonders.

Pro Tip: Involve your kids in planning your trip. Start discussing with them long before the trip and let them know what to expect during the trip.

7. Prioritize Safety

You can keep your child safe and secure with some of these travel must-haves:

  • Child ID bracelets or tags with emergency contact info
  • A small first-aid kit
  • Travel car seats or booster seats, if required

Pro Tip: Always set a "what to do if we get separated" plan before your trip.

How to Plan a Perfect Trip to Abroad

Planning for an international trip can be overwhelming and time-consuming. Although it should be something fun and positive, it can easily become a stressful task whether planning a short trip or a long one.

It's very easy to get confused in the beginning, especially when you haven't done something like this before.

A lot of information can be found on the internet but the question is where to start. So, here we've created a step-by-step travel planning guide on how to make a trip easier and less stressed.

Step 1 - Choose your destination (where you want to go)

Finalise a destination where you are planning to travel. Think about the vacation you really want. Don't be like "I don't know, I just want to travel". This way, you won't be able to plan a trip that will really execute. So, pick a destination, as it will give you a definite goal. Make sure to choose a destination that fits your budget as well.

Step 2 - Decide the length of your trip

Before you jump to your cost research, decide the length of your trip. Once you've decided whether you want to go on a short trip (a few days) or a long one (a few weeks), it will become easy to figure out how much it is going to cost.

Step 3 - Research your travel costs

Do thorough research on the prices in your destination. Include the following in your cost research:

  • Flight ticket
  • Accommodation
  • Getting around (by local transport or taxi)
  • Sightseeing & attractions
  • Places to eat & drink
This will provide you an estimate of how much money you'll need for your trip.

Step 4 - Book flight and accommodation for your trip

Search for online deals and packages for your chosen destination. Compare the price across various booking sites. And you can save money by booking in advance. Another tip to save money is to travel off-season.

Step 5 - Plan and decide your trip itinerary

Start with making a list of all the major places you would like to see. Plan your activities and calculate how much they cost. It will help you make any adjustments to your savings. Ask family & friends who have been there.

Use online resources like Travel blogs, Google, and Trip Advisor for ideas while planning your itinerary for your destination. But make sure your research is up-to-date.

Step 6 - Cross-check your documents

Before you pack your bags, make sure to cross-check all your required documents. Mentioned below is the document checklist:

  • Passport
  • Visa (if applicable)
  • Flight & accommodation tickets
  • Travel insurance
  • Travel vaccination proof (find out in advance if any immunizations are required for your destination and get vaccinated if mandatory)
  • Credit Cards
  • Driving License
  • A few passport size photos
Please note: Take copies of your important documents.

Step 7 - Pack your stuff

Now it's time to pack your bag. The best thing to do here is to pack minimum because you can always buy the needful there. The more I travel, I realize we don’t need to pack a lot of stuff.

  • Pack your clothes according to the weather at your destination place.
    • Don't forget to add sunglasses, scarves, belts, and socks on your list.
  • The most important toiletries to pack are:
    • Toothbrush, toothpaste & floss
    • Shampoo & conditioner
    • Shower gel/soap & face wash
    • Comb, hair ties & hairpins
    • Towel
    • Deodorant
    • Sunscreen, face lotion/gel & moisturizer
    • Personal hygiene products
(Some of the toiletries can be skipped if you are staying in a hotel.)
  • Electronic items like mobile, chargers, laptop/iPad, camera & universal power adapter.
  • A small medical kit including band-aids, eyedrops, earplugs, doctor-prescribed antibiotics, painkillers, and hand sanitizer.
  • USB card reader and memory card.
  • Keep your house keys safe with you.
  • Download important mobile applications:

Step 8 - Enjoy your trip

Now, the last step is to enjoy your trip and have fun. Take some photos, buy some souvenirs, and create amazing travel memories.

You're more likely to have a great vacation if you plan your trip with care whether you are traveling with family or friends or solo. Now, start saving money for your trip and enjoy every single second of it.
